Saturday I had to go to a baby shower. At my age, I really don't think I should have to sit through one more 2 hour marathon of opening diapers and onesies and hearing the word "cute" uttered hundreds of times, at least. Plus I was tired and cranky from too much fun the night before- it's a wonder I didn't snap.
Sunday I had to take Nina to a birthday party. Two hours of happy, kind-of-controlled chaos. I liked John. He was 8 and quite round. He wore glasses and sweats. After I guessed his age, he told me he still has his canines and doesn't really think he believes in Santa anymore. And he knows the tooth fairy is his mom because last time he wasn't really asleep when she put a dollar under his pillow.
Sunday night we had an Oscar party. We were able to scrounge up some movie-loving friends who had seen most of the nominated films and didn't mind staying out till midnight on a school night. The Oscars were good, although I was surprised Gravity won so many awards… but, its not all that important to me anymore who the winner is. I just like seeing the clothes and hoping something crazy happens. And seeing how much plastic surgery people have had (Goldie Hawn… Kim Novak… yikes!) There wasn't too much craziness, other than Jared Leto saying something about dreams and the Ukraine, and Matthew McConaughy calling himself his hero. My favorite parts of the party were our spontaneous group rendition of Bette Midler's "The Rose", and speculating on the pros/cons of a Naked Oscars. I personally don't want to see the winner for best sound editing naked.
