Ode To An Aquarium

Big Al and I met 22 years ago this month, in a dinky little one room aquarium in Maine.  He wrote this to me on our third anniversary.  I still love it, and him, very very much.

It was on a Saturday, the dogfish were a bitin',
Old folks were annoying them, at least the kids weren't fightin'.
You were wearing orange and white and a slickery coat of yellow
Your hair so bleached by summer sun, I knew I must say "Hello!"
As we discussed the rain and kids and things to do inside
I felt a feeling grow within, just like a coming tide.
The woman of my dreams, I knew for whom I had been searchin'
Was seated here, right next to me, holding a sea urchin.
A visit to a seaside home was a risky invitation
But I received it like a lifeboat from the Coast Guard station.
Some not so fizzy Dr. Pepper went down like Dom Perignon
And as the kids played Genesis we just talked on and on.
Returning to my soaking tent, my "old" life on the wane,
I had no doubt that you and I would be together again.
It truly is miraculous things happened just that way.
And I thank God for the journey that began three years ago today!
