I Have a Whooshing Sound in My Ear

It's been happening for about 2 weeks now.  It sounds like I'm listening to my heartbeat through a stethoscope, but the sound is coming from deep inside my right ear.  It's not painful, but keeps me up at night, when it's especially loud. I've been doing research online to see what it might be- I've pretty much narrowed it down to cancer of the neck, brain or eardrum.

I went to see the doctor last week- instead I saw the new nurse practitioner. She was adorable- she looked and talked like she was about 17. She threw all kinds of information at me- a little too much.  She called what I had "eustachian tube dysfunction." She thought I should treat it with a cocktail of Claratin, Benadryl, Afrin, Flonase, Neti-pot, and pots of water boiling on the stove.

I've tried all of those things- it's not better. In fact, I think it's worse. And I walk around feeling a little stoned- kind of like my head is floating a couple of feet above my body. And I'm exhausted. So I called back today to see if I could go see an ENT specialist or something. Nurse Adorable returned my call and said she had talked to the doctor- he said he would recommend prednisone. (http://dotthefish.blogspot.com/2012/05/wonder-drug.html )

I just laughed and said, "Are you kidding me?!" and she said, "I know, prednisone stinks! So what do you want to do?"

I'll probably take the prednisone.  And I probably should look for a new doctor, but I probably won't.

you take a picture of the pretty nurse? and is your ear cured? I had/have ETD as well, and when I touch my left ear, I hear a whooshing sound, it can also be triggered when I hear a screech or weird obnoxious noises and i hear like a pressured wind whoosh in my ear. I just got flonase but i've been on antibiotics, I was wondering how long it will take to get back to normal. Possible that I got it from a head cold which i might have as a i still have minor headaches but before i had pretty bad migraines..

Good luck! I've had my whooshing for a month and a half... ALL THE TIME! I have to say I'm getting a little more used to it. I'm sleeping better, at least. I tried flonase, and a bunch of other things... I had an MRI today. We'll see what they find, if anything. Let me know if you get any answers.

As for the pretty nurse, I'll see if she lets me take her picture. That is, if I ever see her again. I really need to switch doctors.
