I just discovered my new favorite food store. It's in a dumpy little town nearby- it's a small version of a big chain supermarket we have in these parts. There are usually about 5 cars in the parking lot.
Here's what I love about it: it's small, and has only what you need. There's not a cereal aisle a 1/4 mile long that you have to wade through to find your 2 favorite boxes. They have my favorite brownie mix, my favorite spaghetti sauce. They have a tiny produce section with all the fruits and vegetables anyone would ever need.
Don't get me wrong- I love the Wegman's of the world. I'm a hedonist too. But those stores are exhausting- the parking, the crowds, the lines, the CHOICES!! They're nice for an occasional field trip. But on an every day basis, all I need are 2 kinds of breads, regular or greek yogurt, skim or whole milk, salty or sweet butter, creamy or crunchy peanut butter, etc. Food is really just something to keep us alive- shopping for it shouldn't be such an event.
Today, being a newcomer, I accidentally got in the 14 or less line with my 30 something items. I realized it when I noticed the guy behind me was holding 2 bags of m&m's. I felt badly and said to the bagger lady, "I can't believe I got in the wrong line." She said, "No problem- it's not like this is Wegman's and we ever have any kind of a line. And our customers are pretty forgiving." I gave the m&m guy an embarrassed smile and mouthed "sorry" and he smiled back like he had all the time in the world.
I love that store.
