Birthday Party

Yesterday I went to a 5 year old's birthday party.  The birthday girl was dressed as a princess and hid under the dining room table for the duration of the party.  She opened her presents there and didn't even come out when we sang happy birthday to her.  Other children had to blow out her candles for her.  She ate her cake under the table.   Kind of made me wish I could be 5 again and do whatever I wanted and no one would think I was crazy.

There was a man from Vancouver there.  He was in his sixties, wearing a little tweed cap over his shoulder-length curly grey hair.  He had a long, cream-colored turtleneck on with a wide brown belt wrapped around his belly.  When I watched him. he reminded me of those videos where a person is standing still while everything around him is sped up.  He talked and moved slowly compared with the rest of us.  I didn't talk to him till I was leaving the party- I said goodbye and he came very close to me and started this conversation:

I love hearing about your gardens.

(I don't know how he knew about my gardens, but I went along with him.)  Oh, thanks! I really enjoy gardening.

I love how you have created beautiful spaces to surround yourself with.

Well, I'm lucky I have the space to do it. It's fun and good therapy for me.  Calms me down.

You women who create things. So close to nature. I really get into that. It's beautiful.

Um, thanks! It's been nice meeting you. Have a good trip home!

(Moving even closer) I'm really into you hippie chicks.

(I'm really not a hippie chick.)
