Could You Paint My Baby Jesus? And My Hay Wagon?

When people find out that I have some artistic ability, they start asking me to help them with things.  Lots of things, often not directly related to making art.  Things like interior decorating, designing gardens,  making flower arrangements for their kids weddings, sewing curtains, picking house colors, etc.  I've had all the classic art requests too: "Could you paint my dog who just died?"  "Can you do a painting of my parents house for their anniversary?" "Could you paint a soccer game on my daughter's bedroom wall?"  I've painted families climbing mountains, martyrs, fashion ads for clothing stores, Maine landscapes, zodiac signs for a calendar.... I've taught art, freelanced, sold paintings at art exhibits.  I've never made much money as an artist, mostly because I never ask for enough.  A lot of the time, when it's a friend, I don't ask for anything.  And I'll do almost anything because I have a hard time saying "no."

Here were my latest 2 jobs, in the last few weeks.  First, a friend with leukemia asked me to paint the peeling face of a Baby Jesus statue that an elderly friend of hers had.  How can you say no to a friend with leukemia?!  I painted it and said I didn't want any money- how could I ask an old lady for money for painting the face of her Baby Jesus Statue?!  A couple of days ago she sent me sent me a check for $50 and this picture:

She decided to give the statue to some old nun friends of her. (They look so happy! How can I keep the $50?!)

My other big job was painting a hay wagon.  It will be in a parade on Sunday- it will be used at an orchard for hay rides in the fall.  The orchard is owned by an Irish farmer friend of ours.  He has 8 kids.   I probably will just charge him for supplies.  How can I ask him for money?  He's a farmer!  With 8 kids!
I wouldn't know what to charge him anyway- I've never painted a hay wagon before.

That's not her in the picture- I have no idea who that woman is.
