When I was in college I went to hear Todd Rundgren perform every chance I got. I was in awe of his talent. He mostly appeared in clubs- if he wasn't with his band, Utopia, he was all alone, running around the stage like a musical madman, pushing buttons and pedals and playing various instruments to create the sound of a 5 piece band. I got to meet him once, before a show at Convention Hall, on the boardwalk at Asbury Park. He and his playboy bunny wife and baby were out for a walk. I smiled and said "Hi."
My other up-close and personal encounter with Todd was when he stood and played his guitar for an entire song right in front of the spot where I was leaning on the stage. I rested my hand on his sneaker for the duration of the song. I like to believe that he knew it was there- that's why he didn't move.
My boyfriend was jealous. Oh well.
Here is Todd with another favorite of mine, Daryl Hall. It's a little cheezy- if someone like Celine Dion was singing it, it would be awful. But these two pull it off... it's nice to hear them going strong:
