Maurice Sendak Died this Morning

He was described in the New York Times today as the most important children's book illustrator of the 20th century.  I loved his illustrations as much as his writing- he was a dark, crazy, twisted, funny, sensitive, imaginative man who has been an inspiration to me since I was a little girl.  As a child I studied his art- the color, compositions, characters (Little Bear!) and that cross-hatching!  I heard him say in a recent interview that he didn't write for children- he didn't particularly like them.  He wrote for himself.  Made me like him all the more.
Children who grow up hearing his books are the lucky ones.

"Milk in the batter, milk in the batter.   We bake cake and nothing's the matter!"
